Xbox finally has a dedicated award for completing a game's base achievements

Xbox has introduced Mythic Achievements, a new award for unlocking every original achievement in a game. The system is rolling out to Xbox Insiders and works retroactively, including for eligible Xbox 360 games.

Xbox has officially introduced Mythic Achievements, a new completion award earned by unlocking all of a game's original achievements. The feature started rolling out to Xbox Insiders on September 29, giving Xbox its own dedicated recognition for finishing a game's base achievement list.

Unlike simply reaching a particular Gamerscore total, Mythic status is tied to completing the original achievement set for an individual game. In purpose, it is similar to PlayStation's Platinum Trophy, although the two systems do not work exactly the same way.

How Mythic Achievements work

To earn a Mythic Achievement, you need to unlock every achievement that originally came with the game.

Achievements added later through DLC or updates do not count towards the requirement. Xbox will label these later additions as "add-on" achievements, so players can see which ones matter for Mythic progress and which ones can be skipped.

There is also no risk of losing Mythic status later. If you complete the original list and earn the award, it remains on your account even if the developer adds more achievements afterwards.

That distinction should make the system much easier to use for games that continue receiving expansions long after launch. Players can complete the achievement list the game shipped with without being pulled back in every time another DLC pack adds extra Gamerscore.

Games you already completed can earn Mythic status

Xbox is applying Mythic Achievements retroactively rather than starting everyone from scratch.

Eligible games that you completed before the feature arrived can already be marked as Mythic. Xbox says this also covers eligible Xbox 360 titles, so long-time achievement hunters may find they already have several Mythic completions waiting on their profile.

You do not need to replay those games or unlock the achievements again.

Xbox profiles are getting a new Gaming tab

Mythic Achievements are arriving alongside a broader update to how Xbox displays achievement history.

Profiles now have a Gaming tab where players can view their achievements, revisit completed games and track progress towards their next Gamerscore milestone badge. Mythic completions also appear here, with completed games receiving a special frame in achievement history.

You can visit a friend's Gaming tab too, including a look at which games they have taken to Mythic status.

Xbox is also adding clearer completion tracking to individual game pages. A progress bar at the top of the achievement list shows how close you are to earning Mythic, while a filter lets you focus on any original achievements you still need.

Similar progress information will appear through the Xbox Guide and achievement details, so you will not need to dig through the full list to work out what is still required.

For achievement hunters, the important change is that Xbox now has a permanent, visible marker for completing a game's original list. Previously, getting every base achievement could give you the game's full original Gamerscore, but there was no separate system-wide completion award attached to it.

Mythic Achievements are currently available through the Xbox Insider programme. Xbox has not announced when the feature will roll out to all players.
